Roulette odds
Despite the many stories about people losing everything they have at the roulette table, the odds on the roulette game are not bad at all; almost every bet on the table offers even odds - when you don't take the zero into calculation.

On the European roulette table there are 36 different numbers and a single zero. The zero represents the casinos long term profit at the roulette tables.
It's possible to make the following bets:
Red/Black
You can place a colour bet on either black or red. The 36 numbers are either black or red - 18 numbers are black and 18 numbers are red. So, if there was no green Zero, the odds of this bet would be 50%. The bet pays 1-1.
Odd/Even
Another 'even odds' bet is the odd or even number bets - where the odds of winning would also be 50% if there was no green zero.
First Half/Last Half
The first half or last half bet is also another bet with almost a 50% chance of winning. When you bet on the first half you bet on the numbers 1 to 18. When you bet on the last half you bet on the numbers 19 to 36. Again, the chances of winning are almost 50%. The odds of this bet pays 1-1. This bet is also called a high/low bet.
First/Middle/Last Dozen
Wagering on a dozen numbers (12 numbers) can be done with the numbers 1 to 12, 13 to 24, or 25 to 36. The payout on this bet is 2-1.
First/Second/Third Columns
The roulette table is divided into 3 columns of numbers - each column has 12 numbers. It's possible to bet on a column of numbers: Betting on the left column would be betting on the numbers 1-4-7-10 and so on. The odds for a column bet are 2-1.
Two out of Three Dozens
This is a bet on either the numbers 1 to 24 or the numbers 13 to 36. The odds of this bet are 1-2. (If you bet two units you will get your original bet back plus one unit in winnings.)
Two out of Three Columns
You can either bet on the two left columns or the two right columns - the odds for this bet are 1-2.
Six Number Combination
Betting on a six number combination will be explained later - the odds of such a bet are 5-1.
It is clearly noticeable in the following combinations, as the betting numbers are decreasingin value, proportionally does the betting odds and payout ratio increases.
Four Number Combination
The odds of this bet are. 8-1
Three Numbers
The roulette odds for this bet are 11-1.
Two Numbers
Pays 17-1.
Single Number Bet
Pays 35-1.
Special Rules Found at Some Casinos
The casinos edge is always the same except at some casinos that offer some special rules if the ball lands on zero. Some casinos have special rules around the small bets red/black - odd/even and first half/last half when the ball lands on zero. There are two variations of this special zero rule:
In Prison
When the ball comes to a rest on zero the three types of bets mentioned above will not be collected by the croupier - instead they will have to stay on the table - in other words they are in prison. In the next spin the players have a chance of winning there original bet back - if there bet wins they will get there original bet back but with no additional win. If the ball should land on zero once again the bets will remain in prison one more spin and so on. This special rule is greatly to the advantage for the players, as it reduces the casinos edge to only 1.35%.
La Partage
When the ball comes to a rest on zero - the three types of bets mentioned above will not be fully collected by the croupier. Only half of the players’ bets will be collected - the rest will be returned to the players. Similar to the In Prison rule, the La Partage rule also reduces the casinos edge to only 1.35%
